The origin of its name comes from a Letter of Privilege, which is preserved in the town hall of the Villa, given by King Don Enrique to the Archbishop of Toledo, Don Pedro Tenorio, authorizing in 1396 that the place called La Moraleda passes to be called Villanueva del Arzobispo.By this Charter of Privilege the city is founded with a series of ordinances and charters and the obligation of the residents to surround the city in five years.

In Arab times Villanueva was one of the fortresses that reinforced the town of Iznatoraf, called La Moraleja.After the conquest by Fernando III the Saint of Iznatoraf, this village of La Moraleja was donated by the king to the Advancement of Cazorla.In 1396, the Archbishop of Toledo, Don Pedro Tenorio, granted it the title of Villa, acquiring its own jurisdiction and becoming the most important commercial nucleus of the Cazorla manor.It stood out for its flour production, with numerous flour mills that lined the passage of the Guadalquivir River.Miguel de Cervantes lived for a time in this town, in 1592, as a wheat tax collector.Felipe II granted him criminal jurisdiction in 1573.It received the title of city from the hands of King Alfonso XIII in 1920.

Parte de su término municipal se encuentra bañado por los ríos Guadalquivir y Guadalimar, lo que da lugar a tierras fértiles que propician cultivos agrícolas. Es muy importante en este municipio la industria oleícola y cuenta con una de las cooperativas de fabricación de aceite más grandes de nuestro país.

El origen de su nombre viene de una Carta de Privilegio, que se conserva en el ayuntamiento de la Villa, dada por el rey Don Enrique al arzobispo de Toledo, Don Pedro Tenorio, autorizando en el año 1396 que el lugar llamado la Moraleda pase a llamarse Villanueva del Arzobispo. Por esta Carta de Privilegio queda fundada la ciudad con una serie de ordenanzas y fueros y la obligación de los vecinos de cercar la ciudad en cinco años.

En época árabe Villanueva era una de las fortalezas que reforzaban a la villa de Iznatoraf, llamada La Moraleja. Tras la conquista por Fernando III el Santo de Iznatoraf, esta aldea de La Moraleja fue donada por el rey al Adelantamiento de Cazorla. En 1396, el arzobispo de Toledo, don Pedro Tenorio, le concedió el título de Villa, adquiriendo jurisdicción propia y convirtiéndose en el núcleo comercial más importante del señorío de Cazorla. Destacó por su producción de harina, con numerosos molinos harineros que jalonaban el paso del río Guadalquivir. Miguel de Cervantes vivió durante un tiempo en esta villa, en 1592, como recaudador de impuestos de trigo. Felipe II le concedió la jurisdicción criminal en el año 1573. Recibió el título de ciudad de manos del rey Alfonso XIII en 1920.
